Taken from Exhibition text:

Two decades after the fall of the New Order and the civil violence in May 1998, Chinese-Indonesian histories are still largely remained untold, hidden and often collectively forgotten. Stories of the past are only shared in ‘safe’ spaces, at home or abroad, and almost never in public. Art becomes an alternative ‘safe’ space for these histories to be uncovered and re-told in ways that challenge its roots and offer a glimpse to what the future may be.

This exhibition explores how different generations of Chinese-Indonesian artists approach their histories and identity. For these artists, Art becomes a site for mediation, storytelling and reconciliation. The works featured in this exhibition present a collective sense of Chinese-Indonesian histories expressed in ways that speak to many audiences regardless of their age and cultural background. This exhibition is timely of recent events in Indonesia and invites us to reflect back in order to move forward, as Rani states ‘We can not heal what we will not face.’
